Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder where a child knows what they want to say but has difficulty coordinating the muscle movements needed to say those words. It's not about muscle weakness, but a disconnect between the brain and the speech muscles.
Children with apraxia may:
- Struggle to say sounds, syllables, or words correctly
- Say words inconsistently
- Have slow speech development
- Become frustrated when trying to communicate
